The Vast Empty
--the fourth novel in the Certainty Principle Universe
Seventeen-year old Happ is growing weary of the simulated school environment his dad built for him on his family’s small ship hurtling between the stars and wants a chance to meet real people and make a difference in the real world. When he discovers that his new AI-simulated girlfriend, Emme, is in fact a real-world soldier sent from his Mom’s home planet with a cry for help, he may get his chance. But he will need to choose a side in a morally complicated war, figure out his relationship with the enigmatic Emme, and face a godlike Terror attacking her world, a world he might come to view as his own if he can survive long enough to figure out his mysterious Certainty powers and how cooperation balances Certainty in Emme’s Certainty-powered world.
In addition to rousing adventure with spaceships, hand-to-hand combat, exploration of a new world, and a taste of young romance, The Vast Empty explores ideas of justice, mercy, and forgiveness. The story is underpinned by optimism, however difficult the path to it might be, and has relationship at its core.
