Russ offers lectures, class notes, science reasoning puzzles, and lab activities for courses that he teaches through Minnesota State University Moorhead. Most of the lab activities and challenges can be adapted for middle or high school students.
Introductory Course Materials--Earth Science Today Course notes and many lab activities and reasoning challenges are available for this course online, although the course itself is only offered on-campus with lab. Topics of the course include historical geology, physical geology, weather and climate, and astronomy and planets.
Advanced Course Materials--Earth Science Essentials Materials for this course include video lectures from the field and lab, interactive text and videos with science reasoning challenges, and lab activites with detailed walk-through of challenges that arise in doing the labs. This course can be taken for college or graduate credit as a distance learning course by contacting Russ several months prior to the term you would like to take the course (it is only offered on demand). However, course materials are available anytime. Topics of the course include how to read the stories in rocks, principles of stratigraphy, how we figure out what's inside the earth or in a distant star, geysers, radiometric dating, how clouds form, winds, landscape formation, what causes climate, energy balance of the earth, geochemical processes, planetary processes, and many more.
